Rock City Morgue began in 2002, and has morphed into some strange mix of punk and crooner music, thanks to our front man Rik Slave. Rik and I met in NYC’s Lower East Side back in the early White Zombie days. He was in two of my favorite bands – the Kretins and the Swamp Goblins. If you get the first Kretins 7”, you’ll see my name credited for the photography. Years later after White Zombie broke up, I ran into him on Decatur Street, New Orleans’ infamous late night bar crawl. He was still in NY but considering moving back to his hometown of New Orleans.  I was talking with Rhoades D’Ablo and Johnny Brashear about starting a band, and Rik was definitely who we wanted as a front man. After going through a million drummers (ok, 6?) we finally settled on John Gray, who like Rik and I, had spent years in NYC and had even played drums in Rik’s last band, the Man Scouts. Rhoades departed and I added piano. I have fun in this band because the ideas come from everyone, a true band – Rik will sing a melody, or Johnny will have some riffs, or I will come in with a bass line or piano part…it is really organic and effortless. I have the hardest time describing this band (Nick Cave meets the Dead Boys?) Of course with a name like Rock City Morgue, we are a rock band and we are obsessed with the darker side of life – decaying cemeteries, Dark Shadows, and Morgus to name a few. But nothing seems to really peg us, so please take a listen and decide for yourself!
